This condition affects millions of people worldwide, including over 285,000 Canadians. Despite significant progress in its understanding and management over the years, living with type 1 diabetes remains a burden for those affected and their families.
The BETTER project MISSION:
Led by individuals living with type 1 diabetes, parents of children with type 1 diabetes, researchers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers, this project aims to support and improve the quality of life for people affected by type 1 diabetes in Canada.
It is built upon three pillars:
- RESEARCH AND KNOWLEDGE : Through the BETTER registry, anyone living with this condition, or parents of a child with it, can share their life experiences through online questionnaires. The data collected sheds light on various aspects of life with type 1 diabetes, including those that are often overlooked, such as the impact on mental health. This information is used to develop strategies to alleviate this burden.
- ACCESS TO TRAINING AND INFORMATION : We develop and assess the impact of online training platforms for individuals living with the condition and healthcare professionals. We also publish online resources to support and promote knowledge about type 1 diabetes.
- ADVOCACY AND AWARENESS : Together, we mobilize to educate the general public, policymakers, and healthcare organizations about the daily challenges and unique needs of people living with type 1 diabetes. We work to create an environment that promotes access to care, treatment, and appropriate support.
